Dental Implants vs Dentures

Tooth loss is a nationwide issue that affects men and women of all ages, but mostly those over 65. Without replacing missing teeth, a person will likely suffer from further tooth loss and facial atrophy.

Two of the most common tooth replacement options are traditional dentures and implant-retained dentures. Dental implants are small, fixed rods that attach to a dental prosthetic. Traditional dentures are removable appliances that can replace a few missing teeth or an entire row of missing teeth.

At The Smile Center in Virginia Beach, VA, patients have the choice between dental implants and dentures. Our team of experts explains three key differences between these two options in this blog.

Procedure

One of the greatest differences between implants and dentures is the process patients go through to get them.

Dental implants require surgery, multiple appointments, and up to six months of healing time. Dentures do not require surgery. Patients only need two appointments in the span of about two to three weeks before receiving their dentures.

Maintenance

Once a patient has dental implants or a denture, they must commit to maintaining their new prosthetic.

For implant patients, this is like caring for the natural teeth: brushing in the morning and evening and flossing daily.

Dentures require a little more upkeep, including removing and soaking the denture at night, cleaning it with a safe cleaner and brush, and visiting the dentist regularly to have the dentures refitted.

Cost

Dental implant-retained dentures cost more than traditional dentures because a surgical procedure is required. How much patients pay for their implants depends on several factors, including how many implants are placed.

Longevity

With proper care, dental implants can provide patients with a stable and beautiful smile for more than 40 years. Even with proper care, dentures need to be replaced at least every 10 to 15 years.

Stability

Dental implants are the only restorative option that replaces the tooth root. In doing so, the implant and jawbone fuse together through a natural process called osseointegration. This provides optimal stability for as long as the implant is in place.

Dentures, however, are known to slip and rub against the gum tissue, causing discomfort. There are ways to prevent this, of course. If you choose dentures, talk to our dentists at our Virginia Beach practice about how to avoid ill-fitting dentures.

When Implants and Dentures Work Together

Patients can also choose implant-supported dentures to replace their missing teeth. This option involves the placement of four to eight dental implants and permanently attaching a denture to them. Implant-supported dentures are the best of both worlds for patients who have endured extensive tooth loss.
